When the Pakistani government decided that Urdu will be the State language of Pakistan then the people of East Pakistan devoted their life for Bengali. On 21 February many Bengali were killed when Pakistani Army opened a fire on the rally of Bengali. From that year the Bengali nation commemorate  this day with honor.
The first Shaheed Minar was established immediate after the event of 21 February. It was established near Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The establishment started from 22 February and was established by a person, namely Pearu Sarder. This monument was inaugurated by the father of Shofiur Rahman, a martyr of language movement day. A number of  monuments of the same model were also established at different places of the country. But the monument was destroyed by the Pak-Army within a few days. After that in 1956 a decision was taken to establish a new monument. Famous architect Hamidur Rahman created the design of the new monument. His design includes a half circle column symbolizing a mother with her fallen children. Finally the construction work started on November, 1957 under the supervision of Hamidur Rahman and Novera Ahmed. This construction was completed on 1963 and was inaugurated by the mother of Abul Barkat. This monument was also ruined by Pak-Military during liberation war.
After liberation war in 1972 the reconstruction activity of Shaheed Minar was taken. This reconstruction work war supervised by architect SHM Abul Bashar.  The Central Shaheed Minar is a part of our national identity.
