National Memorial Monument, which is also known as Jatiyo Smriti Shoudho is a symbol for the memory of the martyrs who sacrifice their life for the sake of the country in the liberation war in 1971 and brought the independence of Bangladesh from Pakistani rule. The monument is located at Savar, about 35 km north-west of the Dhaka city. In order to build the monument a national design competition was held in June, 1978 and among fifty seven proposal, the proposal of Syed Mainul Hossain was selected.
The monument is composed of 7 isosceles triangular pyramid shape structures, with the middle one being high and reaches 150 feet. Each 7 isosceles triangular pyramid shape structures varying in size in its height and base. The height one has the smallest base while the broadcast base has the smallest height. The plans are folded at the middle and placed one after another. The structure gives the memorial a unique characteristics and that is it changes its configuration when viewed from different angles. Concrete has been used for the construction of the monument while red bricks are used for the construction of the pavement in front the complex and other structures. This combination gives an enormity to the monument. Several mass-graves and pool of water body are placed in front of the complex. This also gives an unblamable majesty to the monument.
The monument complex spreads over an area of 34 hectares which is surrounded by an area of 10 hectares. From the main gate one can see the monument axially, but to reach there one has to walk through different ups and downs of pavements and cross an artificial lake by a bridge and all the things represent the struggle of the Bangladeshi people for their independence. The construction work of the complex was completed in 1982. Every year a lot of tourist visit the memorial, the sign of valour of the Bangladeshi.
